Phil Wayne

Phil Wayne was an Emmy-nominated costume designer whose three-decade career included live awards shows, primetime series, children's programs, daytime dramas, game shows and more. In addition to his professional achievements, he was a longtime member of the Television Academy who served the organization in key leadership roles.

Born in Burbank, California, Wayne broke into television in the late 1970s. He early credits included the 53rd Annual Academy Awards and the sketch-comedy series Fridays.

His work in the years that followed included additional Oscars telecasts, as well as the variety series Dolly, the daytime dramas General Hospital and Passions, the Emmy-winning comedy Arrested Development and the game shows Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy! He also supervised the costumes for The 15th Annual Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Television Night at the Hollywood Bowl 1 & 2.

Wayne received an Emmy Award nomination for the 2005 History Channel miniseries Conquest of America and a Daytime Emmy nomination in 1990 for Early A.M., a spin-off of the Southern California morning show AM Los Angeles, which he also supervised.

He joined the Television Academy in 1978, and in the years that followed he served two terms as governor of the Costume Design & Supervision Peer Group. In addition, as chair of the Sculpture Committee, he was responsible for the growth of the Hall of Fame Plaza at the Academy's headquarters in L.A.'s NoHo Arts District.

Wayne died on June 30, 2016, in Burbank, California.
