John Glenn was the third U.S. astronaut in space, and the first American to orbit Earth, circling it three times. He also had a successful political career as a Senator from Ohio. Before joining NASA, Glenn was a distinguished fighter pilot in World War II and Korea.

After retiring from the space program in 1964, Glenn remained a public personality who appeared on shows hosted by Merv Griffin, Johnny Carson, David Frost, Mike Douglas, Joey Bishop and Jay Leno. He was also the subject of a 2013 documentary, John Glenn: A Life of Service.

Additionally, in 2001, Glenn appeared as himself on the popular comedy series Frasier. Glenn also lent his voice to the television documentaries The American President, in which he voiced Rutherford B. Hayes, and Kitty Hawk: The Wright Brothers’ Journey of Invention, in which he voiced aviation pioneer Wilbur Wright.

Glenn died December 8, 2016, in Columbus, Ohio. He was 95.
