Harry Stradling Jr.

Harry Stradling Jr. was a cinematographer best known for his Oscar-nominated work on the films 1776 and The Way We Were. He also lensed the Western film Rooster Cogburn and the classic Western series Gunsmoke.

Additionally, Stradling Jr. contributed to the show Cimarron Strip and the limited series George Washington. The latter, about the early life and career of America’s first president, starred Barry Bostwick and Patty Duke and earned the cinematographer a 1984 Emmy nomination.

Stradling Jr. also worked on the films Little Big Man, Bank Shot, Midway, The Greatest, A Fine Mess, Blind Date, There Was a Crooked Man…, McQ, Convoy, Buddy Buddy, Prophecy and Caddyshack II.

Stradling Jr. got his start as a camera assistant and camera operator, beginning on George Cukor's 1944 film Gaslight. He went out on his own for the first time on 1967’s Welcome to Hard Times, a Western starring Henry Fonda.

He was also notably the son of acclaimed director of photography, Harry Stradling Sr., who won Academy Awards for The Picture of Dorian Gray and My Fair Lady.

Stradling Jr. died October 17, 2017, in Woodland Hills, California. He was 92.
