In 1999, O'Connor starred in a film adaptation of Jane Austen's Mansfield Park. The next year, she appeared in another adaptation of a novel, this time playing the title role in the 2000 TV movie version of Madame Bovary. She received her first Golden Globe nomination for this performance. In 2002, after an acclaimed turn in Stephen Spielberg's A.I.: Artificial Intelligence, she played Gwendolen in a film adaptation of Oscar Wilde's classic play The Importance of Being Earnest. Other films of note include Blessed and The Hunter.
O'Connor had her first regular role in a television series in the 2008 show Cashmere Mafia. From 2013 to 2014, she played Rose Selfridge in the BBC series Mr. Selfridge. In 2014, she appeared in a leading role in the British drama The Missing. She received her second Golden Globe nomination for her performance. O'Connor can next be seen starring in the television series Cleverman, a joint Australia-New Zealand co-production.
