Bill Macy

Bill Macy was an American actor.

Macy worked as a cab driver for ten years before landing a job as Walter Matthau’s understudy in the 1958 Broadway play, Once More, With Feeling. He played a cab driver in a 1966 episode of the soap opera, The Edge of Night, and became an original cast member of the long-running theatrical revue, Oh! Calcutta!

Producer Norman Lear saw Macy in an off-Broadway comedy and brought him to Hollywood, where Macy played a small part as a police officer on an episode of All in the Family, and then landed the role of Walter Findlay, the husband of Bea Arthur’s titular character on Maude, a spinoff of All in the Family which aired for six seasons from 1972 to 1978.

Macy’s other television work includes St. Elsewhere, The Love Boat, L.A. Law, The Facts of Life, Highway to Heaven, Murder, She Wrote, Matlock, Columbo, Diagnosis Murder, NYPD Blue, Chicago Hope, Seinfeld, Touched by an Angel, ER, How I Met Your Mother, and My Name is Earl.

Film appearances include The Late Show (with Art Carney and Lily Tomlin), The Jerk (with Steve Martin), Serial (with Martin Mull and Tuesday Weld), My Favorite Year (with Peter O’Toole), The Doctor (with William Hurt), Analyze This (with Robert De Niro and Billy Crystal), and The Holiday (with Cameron Diaz and Jude Law).

Macy died October 17, 2019, in Los Angeles, California. He was 97.
