Television Academy chair Frank Scherma and actress Yvette Nicole Brown announce this year's 75th Emmy Awards nominees at the place where it all began – the Hollywood Athletic Club.
75th Emmys: The Nominations
Television Academy chair Frank Scherma and Emmy-nominated actress Yvette Nicole Brown met on historic ground to announce the nominees.
History was in the making at the July 12 announcement of the 75th Emmy nominations — and on more than one front. While the industry awaited word of who would capture noms in this diamond-anniversary year, the writers' strike was marking its eleventh week and SAG–AFTRA was close to a tipping point. Its contract with producers would expire at midnight: would the sides find agreement, or would the industry find itself in a double strike?
The actors' strike became a reality the next day, but the happy news of the annual Emmy noms could not be denied. To that end, Television Academy chair Frank Scherma and Emmy-nominated actress Yvette Nicole Brown (Community, A Black Lady Sketch Show) met on historic ground: the Hollywood Athletic Club on Sunset Boulevard, where the first Emmys ceremony was held in 1949. Together, they announced nominees in eleven key categories during a twelve-minute ceremony, streamed live at eight-thirty in the morning. Full results were immediately posted online; here are some highlights:
- In its fourth and final season, HBO's Succession secured the most nominations of any series: twenty-seven. Three of its performers — Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong — are competing for lead-actor honors, while Sarah Snook is vying for lead actress. Also nominated were four of Succession's supporting actors (Nicholas Braun, Matthew Macfadyen, Alan Ruck, Alexander Skarsgård), one supporting actress (J. Smith-Cameron), three guest actresses (Hiam Abbass, Cherry Jones , Harriet Walter) and two guest actors (James Cromwell, Arian Moayed).
- In its first season, HBO's The Last of Us impressed with twenty-four noms. Stars Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey were both nominated; Pascal scored noms for two other shows as well (Saturday Night Live and Patagonia: Life on the Edge of the World), becoming the most-nominated Latino performer in a single year. Ramsey became the second openly nonbinary performer to be nominated. Also honored were four Last of Us guest actors (Murray Bartlett, Lamar Johnson, Nick Offerman, Keivonn Montreal Woodard) and three guest actresses (Melanie Lynskey, Storm Reid, Anna Torv). Meanwhile, the wide success of the show marked a milestone for videogame-to-screen adaptations.
- In its second outing, HBO's The White Lotus was also a top honoree, with twenty-three noms. Its catch included four nominations for supporting actor (F. Murray Abraham, Michael Imperioli, Theo James, Will Sharpe) and five for supporting actress (Jennifer Coolidge, Meghann Fahy, Sabrina Impacciatore, Aubrey Plaza, Simona Tabasco). In its final season, Apple TV+'s Ted Lasso remained Emmy-happy with twenty-one noms. Also in its final season, Prime Video's The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel made its mark with fourteen.
- The eight rivals for Outstanding Drama Series include four HBO series — House of the Dragon, The Last of Us, The White Lotus and Succession (last year's winner) — as well as Disney+'s Andor, AMC's Better Call Saul, Netflix's The Crown and Showtime's Yellowjackets.
- Competing for Outstanding Comedy Series are Ted Lasso (last year's winner), The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, ABC's Abbott Elementary, HBO's Barry, Hulu's Only Murders in the Building and three newcomers: FX's The Bear, Amazon Freevee's Jury Duty and Netflix's Wednesday.
- The contenders for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series include two Netflix series, BEEF and Dahmer — Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, Prime Video's Daisy Jones & The Six, FX's Fleishman Is in Trouble and Disney+'s Obi-Wan Kenobi.
