Nancy Gates

Nancy Gates was an American actress.

Gates began her career on radio, hosting her own show in Dallas while still in her early teens. She appeared on Orson Welles’s CBS radio program, and on Lux Radio Theatre with William Holden in a production of Sunset Blvd.

Signed to RKO at the age of 15, Gates worked in melodramas and crime thrillers, and was often cast as the female lead in Westerns on film and on television. Her first credited film role was in The Great Gildersleeve, a 1942 film based on the popular radio series. Her other films include The Magnificent Ambersons (with Orson Welles), Suddenly and Some Came Running (appearing opposite Frank Sinatra in both films), and the cult science fiction film World Without End.

Gates appeared in numerous television shows, including Alfred Hitchcock Presents, 77 Sunset Strip, Maverick, The Millionaire, Hawaiian Eye, Gunsmoke, Wagon Train, The Virginian, Perry Mason, Rawhide, Burke’s Law, Bonanza, and Mod Squad. She retired from acting in 1969.

Gates died March 24, 2019, in Los Angeles, California. She was 93.
