He also worked in American television and received two Emmy nominations as a writer for the NBC comedy Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In.

Born in 1930, Lloyd grew up in Manchester, in northern England, and held a number of odd jobs before achieving success in television.

He got his start in the late 1950s as a writer for such BBC shows as Six-Five Special and New Look. He continued to write for many other U.K. programs, often appearing as an actor as well. His credits included The Dickie Henderson Show, Mum's Boys and Who Dunnit?

In the late 1960s he moved to California for a time, and was both a writer and performer for Laugh-In. He received his Emmy nominations for a pair of episodes that aired in 1969.

He created Are You Being Served? with writer David Croft. The show, which was set in a department store, was said tohave been inspired in part by Lloyd's own experiences as a suit salesman in a London department store. It aired from 1972-85 and spawned various spin-offs.

Lloyd and Croft also created 'Allo 'Allo!, which was set in Nazi-occupied France, aired from 1982-92.

Both shows relied heavily on innuendo, double meanings and slapstick.

In 2013, Lloyd was appointed an O.B.E. — Order of the British Empire — for his contributions to his field.

Lloyd died on December 22, 2014. He was 84.
