Me and My Emmy: Picture Editor Malinda Zehner Guerra
The A Black Lady Sketch Show editor reflects on her Emmy-winning night.
EMMY TALLY: One
HOW SHE GOT THE GOLD: For Outstanding Picture Editing for Variety Programming in 2023, for A Black Lady Sketch Show.
NOW FOR THE NOMS: Zehner Guerra has been nominated four times as a picture editor.
STAND BY ME: "Emmy currently resides in her spot of honor over the TV in the living room, but for the first few weeks I definitely brought her with me from room to room throughout the day. And anytime I know I'm going to have a challenging day editing, I'll put her by my computer for inspiration."
PERFECT MATCH: "Everything about that Emmys was truly magical. The moment before the show when [cowinners] Stephanie Filo, Taylor Joy Mason and I realized we had color-coordinated our outfits without discussing it beforehand felt like such a good omen. And then when Robin Thede ran up the aisle to congratulate us, and she also matched, it was just unbelievable! I'll never get over the joy of being onstage with those three amazing women."
EXPERIENCED EYE: "My favorite part of editing is getting to really sink into an actor's performance and experience every character as I go through the dailies. Having been an actor, I appreciate how hard it is to put yourself in such emotional and vulnerable places, and it's a real honor to be trusted to use those emotions to bring a story to life."
