Touched by an Angel Star John Dye Passes
The Mississippi-born actor also appeared in several other series and feature films.
John Dye, an actor best known for his work on the CBS series Touched by an Angel, died January 10, 2011, at his home in San Francisco, California. He was 47.
According to news reports, the cause was heart failure.
On Touched by an Angel, which starred Roma Downey and Della Reese, Dye played Andrew, the Angel of Death. The character was originally intended to be recurring, but by the third season Dye became a regular cast member. The show ran for nine seasons and ended in 2003.
Dye was born January 31, 1963, in Amory, Mississippi. He began performing in high school plays and after a year at Mississippi State University, where he intended to pursue law, he transferred to Memphis State University and changed his major to theater.
Dye landed his first professional job when he was cast in the 1984 film Making the Grade, which was shot in Memphis. Dye, who later relocated to Los Angeles, went on to appear in the films Modern Girls, Campus Man and The Best of the Best.
He also began to work regularly in television, beginning with the daytime drama The Young and the Restless in 1986. He also had recurring roles in the series Murder, She Wrote, Tour of Duty, Jack’s Place, Hotel Malibu and Promised Land.
Other television credits included the miniseries Billionaire Boys Club and the made-for-TV movies Once Upon a Christmas and its sequel.
Survivors include his parents, three brothers and a grandmother.
