Monte Merrick was a writer best known for penning the screenplay for the World War II drama Memphis Belle, which followed the 25th mission of the officers of a U.S. Army Air Corps base in England. The 1990 film starred Matthew Modine and Eric Stolz.

Merrick also co-wrote the 1992 comedy Mr. Baseball, about an aging player who is traded to a team in Japan, starring Tom Selleck and Dennis Haysbert. In addition, he wrote Staying Together, 8 Seconds and Skating to New York. And in 2001 he wrote, directed and produced the comedic short You Never Know, about a man questioning his life choices the night before his wedding.

His work in television was devoted to TV movies, most notably adaptations of Oliver Twist and The Miracle Worker for the small screen. He also wrote the telefilms Flash and Miracle at Midnight, the latter starring Sam Waterston and Mia Farrow, about a family that tries to help their neighbors escape the Nazis.

Additionally, he wrote plays, including Open Heart and A Hell of a Town, as well as a novel, Shelter, a fictional diary of a teenage boy in Oregon.

Merrick died March 24, 2015, in Santa Monica, California. He was 65.
