Israel Horovitz was an American playwright and screenwriter.
He attended Salem Teachers College in Massachusetts in the late 1950s planning to become an English teacher, but left to pursue playwriting while supporting himself as a taxi driver and stagehand.
His first plays were produced off-Broadway in the late 1960s, garnering critical acclaim, and providing early exposure for soon-to-be-stars Al Pacino, Marsha Mason, and Richard Dreyfuss. Horovitz would go on to write more than 70 produced plays, many of which have been translated and performed in more than 30 languages worldwide.
The playwright only had two plays produced on Broadway: Morning, Noon and Night in 1968, and Park Your Car in Harvard Yard in 1991.
Horovitz's film credits include 1982's Author! Author! (with Pacino and Dyan Cannon), 2014's My Old Lady (with Kevin Kline and Maggie Smith), and numerous made-for television movies, including the 2001 James Dean biography starring James Franco.
Horovitz died November 9, 2020, in New York City, New York. He was 81.
