Holly Woodlawn
Holly Woodlawn, born Harold Danhakl, was a transgender actress best known for her appearances in Andy Warhol and Paul Morrissey’s 1970s films Trash and Women in Revolt.
In Trash, she played Holly Sandiago, the lover and protector of the character Joe Smith, played by Joe Dallesandro. Woodlawn received critical acclaim for her performance, and became one of Warhol’s stars for a brief time.
Additionally, Woodlawn most recently appeared on Amazon’s Emmy-winning series Transparent, as Vivian. She also had roles in the films Night Owl, starring John Leguizamo; Billy’s Hollywood Screen Kiss, starring Sean Hayes; and the 1999 indie film Twin Falls Idaho.

Woodlawn’s move to New York City and her subsequent transformation were also immortalized in the Lou Reed song “Walk on the Wild Side,” which began, “Holly came from Miami, F-L-A. Hitchhiked her way across the U.S.A. Plucked her eyebrows on the way. Shaved her legs and then he was a she.”
Woodlawn died December 6, 2015, in Los Angeles. She was 69.
