James Horner was a composer best known for his sweeping scores for such feature films as Field of Dreams, Braveheart and Titanic. For Titanic, he won the Oscar for best original dramatic score and best original song, which he shared with lyricist Will Jennings for "My Heart Will Go On,” performed by Céline Dion. The film’s soundtrack went on to sell 27 million copies worldwide.
Horner worked with Titanic director James Cameron on several of his other films, including Aliens and Avatar, both of which netted him Oscar nominations for best original score. Horner received 10 Oscar nominations in all: for An American Tail, Apollo 13, House of Sand and Fog, Field of Dreams and best picture winners Braveheart and A Beautiful Mind.
Some of his other notable work in film included The Lady in Red, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Patriot Games, Searching for Bobby Fischer, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, Troy and 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man.

He also worked in television, and was responsible for composing the theme music for CBS Evening News with Katie Couric and for the early 1990s television series Crossroads and Fish Police. He also composed music for Star Trek New Voyages: Phase II. In addition, he worked as a conductor on several television movies and specials, including Between Friends, Freedom Song and Rascals and Robbers: The Secret Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn.
Horner died June 22, 2015, in Santa Barbara County, California. He was 61.
