Jim Mees, Primetime Emmy-Winning Production Designer

In addition to his work on numerous comedies and drams, Mees designed sets for three Star Trek spinoffs and won a Primetime Emmy for Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Jim Mees, a Primetime Emmy-winning production designer known for his work on Start Trek and many other television series, died March 29, 2013, at his home in Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania. He was 57.

According to news reports, the cause was pancreatic cancer.

Mees, who was born in Mahopac, New York, developed an interest in design as an adolescent when he became acquainted with the noted textile designer Vera.

He relocated to Loa Angeles in the 1970s and got his start in television on the comedy series Gloria, a spinoff of All in the Family starring Sally Struthers.

His career spanned three decades, during which he earned credits on many series, including One Day at a Time, The Jeffersons, Who’s the Boss?, Valerie, Perfect Strangers, Vanished, Gilmore Girls, Cold Case, Women’s Murder Club, 90210, Private Practice, Lie to Me and Bones. He also designed the made-for-television movie Second Serve.

Mees spent 14 years on three Star Trek spinoffs — Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Enterprise. He received five Emmy nominations for his work on Star Trek: The Next Generation, and won once, in 1990.

In addition to his TV work, Mees designed live shows for such musical artists as the Beach Boys, Earth, Wind and Fire, Chicago and Diana Ross.
